The architect of the Golf Club Grand Ducal was Major J. C. Symonds.
His approach was inspired by the work of another British Major, Tom Simpson, who was the initial choice of decision-makers at Luxembourg’s first golf club, but was unfortunately unavailable for the project.
This explains why our course bears the Simpson stamp and shares many interesting similarities with other venerable courses designed by Tom Simpson, such as Ravenstein in Belgium, Morfontaine in France. Royal Lytham & St Annes in England, Carnoustie in Scotland and Ballybunion in Ireland. It is also the reason that Grand Ducal figures on the Tom Simpson Society’s list of courses designed or remodelled by Tom Simpson.
